A bonded warehouse is a secure facility, authorized by customs authorities, where imported goods can be stored without paying import duties or taxes until the goods are actually removed for domestic sale or use.
Imported goods are moved into the bonded warehouse under customs control immediately after arrival, before duties are paid. The importer can store the goods there indefinitely (subject to local rules, often up to five years), and duties are only assessed and paid when the goods leave the warehouse for domestic consumption. If goods are re-exported directly from the bonded warehouse instead, no duty is owed at all.
For importers managing large inventories or uncertain demand timing, a bonded warehouse can meaningfully improve cash flow by delaying duty payment until goods are actually needed, and it avoids duty altogether on inventory that ends up being re-exported rather than sold domestically.
