Business Continuity Planning (BCP)

Business Continuity Planning (BCP)

Business continuity planning (BCP) is the process of creating systems and procedures to ensure a company can continue operating, or recover quickly, during and after a disruptive event such as a natural disaster, supplier failure, or major logistics disruption.

What Is Business Continuity Planning?

Business continuity planning (BCP) is the process of creating systems and procedures to ensure a company can continue operating, or recover quickly, during and after a disruptive event, such as a natural disaster, supplier failure, or major logistics disruption.

How Does Business Continuity Planning Work?

BCP typically starts with a business impact analysis, identifying which processes and supply chain links are most critical and most vulnerable, then builds specific response plans for each major risk scenario: backup suppliers, alternate transportation routes, emergency inventory reserves, and clear escalation and communication procedures.

Key Components of a Supply Chain BCP

  • Risk and business impact assessment
  • Backup suppliers and alternate sourcing routes
  • Emergency safety stock or buffer inventory
  • Alternate transportation modes and carriers
  • Clear roles, communication plans, and escalation procedures
  • Regular testing and plan updates

Why Business Continuity Planning Matters

Without a BCP, disruptions get handled ad hoc, which is slower and more error-prone exactly when speed matters most. Companies with a tested BCP recover measurably faster from disruptions because decisions (which backup supplier to activate, which alternate route to use) are made in advance, not improvised under pressure.
