What Is Free Time (Free Days)?

Free time, or free days, is the number of days a shipper or consignee can keep an import container at the port terminal or use it outside the terminal before demurrage or detention charges begin to apply.

How Does Free Time Work?

Ocean carriers and terminals grant a set number of free days (often 3-7, depending on the port, carrier, and contract) starting from when a container is discharged from the vessel. Free time is typically split into two clocks: demurrage free time (days the container can sit at the terminal before pickup) and detention free time (days the container can be used outside the terminal before it must be returned empty). Once free time expires, per diem charges accrue for each additional day.

Why Free Time Matters

Missing free time deadlines is one of the most common and avoidable sources of unexpected freight cost. Tracking free time accurately, and coordinating pickup, unloading, and container return within the window, directly protects margins on every import shipment.
