Freight Class

Freight Class

Freight class is a standardized classification system, the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC), used to categorize LTL (less-than-truckload) freight based on characteristics that affect handling and shipping cost.

What Is Freight Class?

Freight class is a standardized classification system, the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC), used to categorize LTL (less-than-truckload) freight based on characteristics that affect handling and shipping cost.

How Is Freight Class Determined?

Freight class (ranging from class 50 to class 500) is determined by four factors: density, stowability, handling ease, and liability (risk of damage or theft). Denser, easier-to-handle, lower-risk freight gets a lower class number and generally lower shipping rates; bulky, fragile, or high-value freight gets a higher class number and higher rates.

Why Freight Class Matters

Misclassifying freight, intentionally or by mistake, is a common cause of shipping cost disputes and unexpected reclassification fees, carriers routinely re-weigh and re-inspect LTL shipments and will rebill at the correct class if the original classification was wrong. Correctly classifying freight upfront avoids these surprise charges and shipment delays.
