What Is Yard Management?

Yard management is the coordination of trailers, containers, and trucks moving through a facility's yard, the outdoor area around a warehouse or distribution center, managing arrivals, dock assignments, and departures.

How Does Yard Management Work?

A yard management system (YMS) tracks every trailer or container's location and status within the yard, from check-in at the gate through dock assignment, loading or unloading, and check-out, coordinating with warehouse staff to schedule dock appointments efficiently and minimize trailer dwell time in the yard.

Why Yard Management Matters

A poorly managed yard creates bottlenecks, trailers waiting for a dock, drivers unable to find their assigned spot, that ripple into delayed loading/unloading and wasted labor time. Effective yard management, especially with advance visibility into expected trailer arrivals, keeps dock scheduling efficient and reduces detention costs from trailers or containers sitting idle longer than necessary.
