Verified Gross Mass (VGM)

Verified Gross Mass (VGM)

Verified Gross Mass (VGM) is the total weight of a packed container, including the weight of the cargo, packaging, and the container itself, verified and declared before shipment.

Verified Gross Mass (VGM) refers to the total weight of a packed container, inclusive of its cargo, packaging, and securing materials.

As of the implementation of the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention amendment on July 1, 2016, it became mandatory for shippers to provide the VGM for each packed container before it is loaded onto a vessel.

Shippers are responsible for accurately determining and communicating the VGM to the carrier and terminal operators, ensuring the safety of maritime operations. This regulation aims to prevent accidents and enhance vessel stability by ensuring that the weight of containers is known and accounted for during the loading process.

VGM is a critical element in maintaining the safety and integrity of containerized cargo shipments.
