China's Pinglu Canal Opens, Creating New Shipping Route to ASEAN
What Happened?
China has inaugurated the 134.2-km Pinglu Canal, establishing a direct waterway for 5,000-tonne vessels from its southwestern regions to the Beibu Gulf. This new corridor significantly shortens the inland journey to the sea by over 560 km, offering a more efficient and cost-effective route to ASEAN markets. Logistics costs are projected to decrease by 18-30%, with new river-sea services to Vietnam already operational.
