How a European Logistics Provider Uncovered the Cause of Container Delays

The freight forwarder used Portcast to uncover delay causes, automate tracking, and scale container volumes 5x in six months.

The Company

‍A European logistics provider with 20 years in the business, moving ~25,000 containers a year. Its customers count on it for reliable ocean freight. To keep that promise, it needed to know where every shipment was, and why some ran late.

The Challenges

Shipments ran late. The team couldn't see why, couldn't rank carriers, and tracked everything in spreadsheets.

  • Delay causes: Late, with no reason why. Shipments landed 3+ days late, breaking trucking and customer plans.
  • Carrier reliability: No way to rank carriers. A few carriers caused most delays on core lanes. Nobody knew which.
  • Customer experience: No branded tracking. Customers were sent to a third-party tool, not the company's portal.

The Solution

Portcast tackled each problem head-on, and went live under the company's own brand.

  • Command center: See every delay, and why. Every shipment live in one view, with instant alerts when something slips.
  • Analytics: Know which carriers deliver. Carriers ranked lane by lane, with strong North Europe coverage.
  • White-label: Their brand, their portal. Their logo, colours and URL, inside the portal customers already use.

The Impact

What changed Detail Result
Late containers identified Portcast flagged that 58% of containers arrived more than three days late, hitting downstream trucking and commitments. 58%
Main delay cause surfaced Port rotation changes were the single biggest driver, behind 36% of delays, a root cause the team could not see before. 36%
Delays cut on core lanes Guided by per-lane reliability, the company shifted volume to its most reliable carrier and delays on its main lanes fell. Fewer delays

Volume grew fast Container volume grew fivefold over six months once the white-labelled view was live with first customers. 5x

Based on the company's own volumes and Portcast's analysis of tracked shipments. Results vary by lane mix, carrier performance and volume.
