3PL (Third-Party Logistics)

3PL (Third-Party Logistics)

A 3PL, or third-party logistics provider, is an outside company that handles some or all of a business's logistics operations, typically warehousing, transportation, order fulfillment, and freight management, so the business doesn't have to build and run that infrastructure itself.

What Is a 3PL (Third-Party Logistics Provider)?

A 3PL, or third-party logistics provider, is an outside company that handles some or all of a business's logistics operations, typically warehousing, transportation, order fulfillment, and freight management, so the business doesn't have to build and run that infrastructure itself.

How Does a 3PL Work?

A company contracts a 3PL to take over specific logistics functions: storing inventory in the 3PL's warehouses, picking and packing orders, arranging freight and last-mile delivery, and often managing returns. The 3PL typically owns or operates the warehouses, transportation network, or technology needed, and bills the client based on volume, storage, or a negotiated service agreement.

Common 3PL Services

  • Warehousing and storage
  • Pick, pack, and order fulfillment
  • Freight transportation and carrier management
  • Customs brokerage and compliance
  • Returns processing (reverse logistics)
  • Inventory management

Why 3PLs Matter

Using a 3PL lets companies scale logistics capacity up or down without owning warehouses or a fleet, and lets them tap into a 3PL's existing carrier rates and network. The trade-off is less direct control and, often, less real-time visibility into what's happening with inventory and shipments once they're in the 3PL's hands, unless the 3PL shares data back proactively.
