What Is Charter Air Freight?

Charter air freight is the practice of booking an entire aircraft exclusively for a single shipper's cargo, rather than booking space on a scheduled commercial flight alongside other shippers' freight.

How Does Charter Air Freight Work?

A shipper or forwarder contracts directly with an aircraft operator to reserve a dedicated freighter (or, less commonly, a passenger aircraft configured for cargo) for a specific route and timeframe. Because the entire aircraft is dedicated to one shipment, charter offers full control over routing, timing, and handling, without competing for space with other cargo.

When Charter Air Freight Makes Sense

• Extremely time-critical shipments where no suitable scheduled flight exists
• Oversized or unusual cargo that doesn't fit standard commercial aircraft configurations
• Emergency situations (disaster relief, urgent parts, project cargo)
• High-volume shipments during severe capacity shortages on scheduled routes

Why Charter Air Freight Matters

Charter is significantly more expensive than standard air freight, but it removes the scheduling and capacity constraints of commercial flights entirely, making it the option of last resort when speed and certainty matter more than cost.
