Middle Mile Delivery

Middle Mile Delivery

Middle mile delivery is the segment of the supply chain between the first mile (origin to initial hub) and the last mile (final hub to customer), typically involving the movement of goods between warehouses, distribution centers, or regional hubs.

What Is Middle Mile Delivery?

Middle mile delivery is the segment of the supply chain between the first mile (origin to initial hub) and the last mile (final hub to customer), typically involving the movement of goods between warehouses, distribution centers, or regional hubs.

How Does Middle Mile Delivery Work?

Goods move in bulk between larger facilities, from a regional distribution center to a local delivery hub, often via truckload or rail, before being broken down into smaller last-mile delivery runs. The middle mile is usually more efficient per unit than the last mile, since it moves larger volumes over longer, more predictable routes.

Why Middle Mile Delivery Matters

The middle mile is where network design decisions, how many hubs, where they're located, how goods flow between them, have the biggest impact on overall delivery speed and cost. Inefficiencies here (poorly located hubs, underutilized trucks) compound into higher costs and slower last-mile delivery downstream.
