Supply Chain Visibility

Supply Chain Visibility

Supply chain visibility is the ability to track and access real-time information about products, shipments, and materials as they move from origin to destination, across every partner and mode of transport involved. It means knowing not just where a shipment is right now, but whether it's on schedule, and what to do if it isn't.

What Is Supply Chain Visibility?

Supply chain visibility is the ability to track and access real-time information about products, shipments, and materials as they move from origin to destination, across every partner and mode of transport involved. It means knowing not just where a shipment is right now, but whether it's on schedule, and what to do if it isn't.

How Does Supply Chain Visibility Work?

Visibility is built by connecting data from carriers, ports, terminals, GPS/AIS trackers, and internal systems (ERP, TMS, WMS) into a single view. Instead of manually checking a carrier's website or waiting for an email update, a visibility platform ingests this data continuously and surfaces exceptions, like a missed vessel connection or a port delay, before they become a missed delivery.

Types of Supply Chain Visibility

  • In-transit visibility: tracking a shipment's live location and status while it's moving
  • End-to-end visibility: visibility across the full journey, from supplier to final delivery, not just one leg
  • Predictive visibility: using data and models to forecast a future state (like an ETA) rather than only reporting the current one
  • Multimodal visibility: visibility that spans ocean, air, rail, and road within a single shipment journey

Why Supply Chain Visibility Matters

Without visibility, teams find out about delays only when a customer complains or a truck doesn't show up at the dock. With it, they can rebook a missed connection, alert a customer proactively, or reprioritize a warehouse dock schedule days in advance. Visibility is also the foundation for accurate demand planning, on-time-in-full (OTIF) performance, and reducing costly buffers like extra safety stock or expedited freight.
