What Is Transit Time?

Transit time is the total amount of time it takes for a shipment to travel from its origin to its destination, typically measured from pickup (or vessel departure) to final delivery (or arrival).

How Is Transit Time Calculated?

Transit time is usually quoted as a range (e.g., "25-30 days") based on the specific trade lane, mode of transport, and routing, including any transshipment stops. Carriers publish estimated transit times per route, but actual transit time can vary due to factors like port congestion, weather, customs delays, or blank sailings.

Transit Time vs Dwell Time

Transit time covers the full door-to-door or port-to-port journey, while dwell time refers specifically to the time cargo sits idle at a single point, like a port or terminal, within that journey. Long dwell times at any point in the route directly extend total transit time.

Why Transit Time Matters

Accurate transit time estimates are essential for inventory planning, customer delivery commitments, and deciding between transport modes (e.g., faster air freight vs slower, cheaper ocean freight). Shippers who only see published average transit times, without real-time visibility into where a specific shipment actually stands, are exposed to costly surprises when actual transit time runs long.
